In this paper, I propose that the visual images of the Mithraic cult meal cannot be read as representations of the actual social practice of the cult. Instead, I suggest that these images are purely symbolic. They carry on the symbolism of the tauroctony and, in that, invite the followers of the cult to honor the God Mithras in the communal meal. A second section of the paper examines the social practice of the Mithraic cult meal based on recent archaeological finds.
