Cautopates statue from Mithraeum III, Carnuntum

Two sandstone fragments from Mithraeum III at Carnuntum, Pannonia Superior, comprising a base with one leg and a downward torch, and a Phrygian-capped head of Cautopates; probably stood at the beginning of the benches alongside the Cautes statue.

Statue in sandstone, in two fragments, found near h and l.

Base (Br. 0.33 D. 0.32) with one leg in long trousers and a hand with a torch downwards (H. 0.70). Head (H. 0.22 Br. 0.13) of Cautopates in Phrygian cap.

Both statues probably stood at the beginning of the benches. It is remarkable that the figure of Cautopates was larger than that of his companion.
