Hekate: Magic, Mystery and the Liminal World

Hekate is not an easy goddess to place. She moves across worlds, traditions and registers: from early Greek sources to the Eleusinian Mysteries, from the Greek Magical Papyri to later philosophical interpretations, always at the edge of what can be clearly defined.

In this conversation with Lenni George, on the occasion of the release of her latest book ‘The Rites of Hekate: From the Dirt to the Divine,’ we explore that shifting presence: a goddess of thresholds, of illumination and obscurity, of descent and return. The discussion moves through history, ritual practice, and altered states, while also touching on her transformation and persistence into later traditions.

Along the way, we consider possible intersections with Mithraic material, not as direct parallels but as shared ways of thinking about initiation, passage and the movement of the soul.
