Il Mitreo del Circo Massimo. Studio preliminare di un monumento inedito tra archeologia, conservazione e fruizione
Emanuela Murgia; Federica Fontana
This volume collects the first results of the extensive and articulated research project dedicated to the Mithraeum of the Circus Maximus, the result of the Research Agreement stipulated in 2016 between the Capitoline Superintendence and the University of Trieste. As part of this collaboration, which subsequently also involved the University of Venice and the Polytechnic University of Milan, the study of one of the most important Mithraic monuments of ancient Rome, still substantially unpublished and little known to the non-specialist public, was tackled with a multidisciplinary approach.
In the volume, the topographical, architectural and decorative aspects of the Mithraeum are presented in depth, making use of the realisation of a new archaeological survey of the building, with the mapping of all the preserved building phases. The study and valorisation project also entailed a series of targeted restoration works, which implemented the environmental monitoring system by placing a series of functional sensors to detect changes in the delicate microclimate of the hypogean rooms. The multi-part publication therefore represents an important milestone for the Capitoline Superintendency and shows, once again, how fruitful collaboration between conservation and research organisations can be.
