Journal of Mithraic Studies

Roger Beck, J. R. Hinnells & Israel Roll · Edited by Richard Lindsay Gordon

The first academic journal devoted exclusively to the study of the cult of Mithras.
The New Mithraeum

Founded and edited by Richard L. Gordon in 1976, the Journal of Mithraic Studies was the first academic periodical dedicated exclusively to the study of the Roman cult of Mithras and related Indo-Iranian traditions. Published in four volumes between 1976 and 1980, it provided a forum for many of the leading scholars in the field, including Roger Beck, Richard Gordon, John R. Hinnells, Israel Roll and others. Although short-lived, the journal played a pivotal role in the renewal of Mithraic studies following the First International Congress of Mithraic Studies and remains one of the most frequently cited serial publications in the discipline.

Around 2000 Richard L. Gordon launched the Electronic Journal of Mithraic Studies (EJMS) as an online revival of the Journal of Mithraic Studies. The project included new articles together with a selection of material from the original journal.
