The Theosophical Review
The Theosophical Review was a monthly journal published in London from September 1897 to February 1909 as the direct successor to Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s Lucifer. It continued the earlier journal’s volume numbering and was initially edited by Annie Besant and George Robert Stow Mead. Published by the Theosophical Publishing Society, it became one of the principal English-language forums for Theosophical writing at the turn of the twentieth century.
The journal covered comparative religion, philosophy, occultism, mysticism, ancient religious traditions and contemporary scholarship, alongside reviews, correspondence and discussions of new publications. Under Mead’s editorial influence in particular, it gave substantial attention to Gnosticism, Hermeticism and the ancient Mysteries. This makes it an important source for the modern esoteric reception of Mithraism and related traditions.
The first series ended in February 1909. The title was revived in 1925 and continued until 1928 under new volume numbering.
