Mithras in Media

Historical region of north-western Iran, forming a major political and cultural centre under the Parthian and Sasanian empires.

Media was an ancient region of north-western Iran that remained an important geographical and political entity under the Parthian and Sasanian empires. Although never incorporated into the Roman Empire, it maintained close political, military and cultural contacts with Rome and forms an essential part of the broader historical context of the Roman cult of Mithras.
