Dura Europos. Crossroads to Antiquity

Lisa R. Brody and Gail L. Horffman

An interdisciplinary volume exploring the history, archaeology, and cultures of Dura-Europos from the Hellenistic to the Islamic period.
The New Mithraeum

Dura-Europos: Crossroads of Antiquity includes eighteen scholarly essays by a wide range of specialists (archaeologists, art historians, linguists, historians, and theologians) and spans the Hellenistic to the Islamic period. Like the exhibition that the catalogue accompanies, the book aims to reintegrate thinking about the city of Dura-Europos. Articles that normally would be published in divergent and specialized journals appear together here, encouraging consideration of the vast range of significance that these materials have in the scholarly world. Like the ancient city, where there were myriad cultures in contact and in communication, the publication breaks disciplinary boundaries and places scholars of Dura-Europos in dialogue with each other and the public, exploring interactions among the disparate cultural, religious, and professional groups that inhabited Dura-Europos.
