The New Mithraeum Database

Since 1826, four mithraea have been found at Nida-Heddernheim.

The altar depicting a lion-headed figure from Bordeaux includes a sculpted ewer and a patera on the sides.

Interpreting the Bas-relief of Mithras Tauroctonos from Osterburken in the Light of Porphyry’s Treatise, The Cave of the Nymphs.

The Mithraeum II in Stockstadt was in fact the first one known built in the vicus. It was destroyed by fire around 210.

During the excavations of 1804-1805, a series of monuments dedicated to Mithras and a temple were discovered at ancient Mons Seleucus.

This relief was found under the Palazzo Montecitorio, in Rome, and bought by the Liebighaus at Frankfort.

Two small heads (H. 0.08-0.10) in Phrygian cap (Gallia, 308; 318 No. 41 and fig. 11), which seem to belong to a representation of Mithras tauroctone.

1) Small white marble column (H. 0.45 diam. 0.07), decorated in high-relief with a spiral-like twig with oak-leaves and acorns (Gallia, 318 No. 46 and fig. 10).

The find of a building (D) about 30-40 mtrs S-W from the Mithraeum seem to point at a second sanctuary.

Red and white granite marble disc (diam. 0.70) surrounded by rays (Gallia, 312; 320 No. 48 and fig. 16).

Three fragments which form together the word: [ma]gister (Gallia, 314 and 328 No. 16d).

There is no reason to assign a sepulchral inscription from Besan
