De Deo Sole Invicto Mithra commentatio
One of the earliest modern scholarly studies devoted exclusively to the Roman god Mithras.
The New Mithraeum
Published in Göttingen in 1814, De deo Sole Invicto Mithra commentatio is one of the earliest monographic studies devoted entirely to Mithras. Eichhorn examines the literary and archaeological evidence available in the early nineteenth century, discusses the iconography and oriental background of the god, and illustrates several Mithraic monuments. The work marks an important stage in the emergence of Mithraic studies as a distinct field of scholarship.
