Ceramic finds indicating fire destruction at the Housesteads Mithraeum

Ceramic finds from both excavations of the Mithraeum at Borcovicium (modern Housesteads), comprising red and thin black-glazed pottery fragments together with a silver coin of Faustina Minor, indicating the sanctuary was in use before 253 A.D. and was most likely destroyed by fire.

Ceramic finds from the Mithraeum at Borcovicium (modern Housesteads).

Both excavations revealed fragments of red pottery and thin black-glazed pottery. A silver coin of Faustina Minor indicates the sanctuary was in use before 253 A.D. The greater part of the sanctuary seems to have been destroyed by fire.
