The New Mithraeum Database

Between the 1st and 4th centuries, Mithraism developed throughout the Roman world. Much material exists, but textual evidence is scarce. The only ancient work that fills this gap is Porphyry’s intense and complex essay.

The Temple of Mithras, inside an ancient military settlement, is situated on the eastern border of the Roman Empire.

Lanciani, Storia Scavi, III, 200 gives another interesting note about a second Mithraeum, discovered in 1869 near the previous sanctuary in Muti's gardens.

This plaque was found in Mithraeum I at Stockstadt broken into pieces inserted between the blocks of the socle of the cult relief, in the manner of a votive deposit.

The Stockstadt Raven is one of only two standing-alone sculptures of this bird to be found in Mithraic statuary.

The votive image was donated by a certain Verus for a mithraeum which was probably located in the hinterland of the Limes.
