The New Mithraeum

Small stone base (H. 0.17 Br. 0.16 D. 0.18), found in the bed of the river Nohain during operations at the railway (Sarriau).

Stela dedicated to Mithras Invictus, found in 1895–1896 at Epamantodurum (modern Mandeure), in the territory of the civitas Sequanorum (Gallia Belgica). The inscription records a vow to Mithras Invictus made for the welfare of Sextus Maenius Pudens.

Five fragments in red terra-sigillata (H. 0.09).

Red terra-sigillata cup (diam. 0.16-0.18), which has a relief-work.

There is no reason to assign a sepulchral inscription from Besan<;on (CIL XIII 5384; Esperandieu inPA 1907,203; Thevenot in Ann. de Bourgogne XXI, 1949, 256f) with the title of mater sacrorum to the cult of Mithras.

"Au cours de sondages qu'il a opere au eimetiere sud-est, Vauthier a trouve l'extremite d'un flambeau tenu par une main, dans la pose exacte des dadophores, et une main tenant entre Ie pouce et l'index une petite offrande (fruit ?), qui evoque les mains trouvees dans Ie temple de Mithra.

Three fragments which form together the word: [ma]gister (Gallia, 314 and 328 No. 16d).

"Vauthier a recolte en outre un buste en marbre blanc, tres fin, de Venus, semble-t-il, une tete de divinite casquee, probablement Minerve, et plusieurs menus debris de petites tetes feminines tres mutiIees.

Red and white granite marble disc (diam. 0.70) surrounded by rays (Gallia, 312; 320 No. 48 and fig. 16).

The find of a building (D) about 30-40 mtrs S-W from the Mithraeum seem to point at a second sanctuary.

Fragments of a slab (Br. 0.33-0.44; originally 0.55).

1) Small white marble column (H. 0.45 diam. 0.07), decorated in high-relief with a spiral-like twig with oak-leaves and acorns (Gallia, 318 No. 46 and fig. 10).

Small woman's head, crowned with flowers.

Two small heads (H. 0.08-0.10) in Phrygian cap (Gallia, 308; 318 No. 41 and fig. 11), which seem to belong to a representation of Mithras tauroctone.

Remnants of a statue, found near the entrance.

Altar in Lucey.

According to PA II, 1907-8, 204 (d. BATH 1908) there must be a vase or plate with a Mithras representation in the Archaeological Seminary of the Uni- versity of Vienne.
